A Name Everyone Knows, a Case No One Saw Coming

Rob Reiner spent half a century as one of the most familiar figures in American entertainment, the actor who played ‘Meathead’ on All in the Family and the director behind The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men. Now his name is attached to a very different story. His son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with murdering both of his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at the family’s Brentwood home. Nick Reiner, 31, pleaded not guilty on August 12, 2026, and is presumed innocent.

The Charges

Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Nick Reiner with two counts of murder. A grand jury indictment returned July 20 added special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by lying in wait, along with an allegation that he personally used a knife as a deadly weapon. Those special circumstances matter: under California law, they make the case eligible for either life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty is pending.

Authorities say Rob and Michele Reiner were fatally stabbed on December 14, 2025, at their home on South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. Prosecutors say Nick Reiner fled the scene and was arrested that same evening in Exposition Park, several miles away. The deaths of a director whose films had been part of American life for decades drew immediate national attention.

‘A Profound Betrayal’

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman described the case in stark terms, calling it ‘a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted’ and saying the indictment brought the matter ‘one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.’ The lying-in-wait allegation added by the grand jury is the prosecution’s assertion that the killings were planned rather than a sudden loss of control, a characterization Nick Reiner’s not-guilty plea directly contests.

Held Without Bail

Nick Reiner is being held without bail. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15 in Department 108 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles. His defense has not laid out its case publicly, and the not-guilty plea puts the burden on prosecutors to prove the charges, including the special circumstances, at trial.
For a family whose name has been woven into American film and television for 50 years, the case now moves toward a courtroom where a single question sits at the center: whether a son planned and carried out the killing of his own parents.
