Prosecutors Say AI Romance Scheme Took $8 Million From Older Victims

A Ghanaian man accused of helping run an AI-assisted romance-fraud network targeting more than 80 older Americans has been extradited to the United States. Federal prosecutors say the alleged scheme took more than $8 million from victims, many of them widows or divorcees.

The Victims Were Chosen Deliberately

Frederick Kumi - also known online as Abu Trica - allegedly helped lead a network that targeted older Americans through dating websites and social media. Prosecutors say members used false identities to build emotional relationships with victims before asking for money or valuables.

Kumi, 31, was arrested in Ghana on December 11, 2025, and extradited to the United States on July 9, 2026, to face federal charges in the Northern District of Ohio.

What Made This Scheme Different From Standard Romance Fraud

The indictment alleges that members of the network used artificial intelligence software and AI-driven video platforms to assume false identities and make those identities more convincing. Prosecutors say the technology helped participants maintain long-distance relationships with victims while concealing who was actually communicating with them.

Victims were allegedly given false stories involving inheritances, businesses, gold, diamonds, and urgent financial needs. Prosecutors say money was sent to accounts controlled by members of the network. The indictment also alleges that Kumi used proceeds to acquire luxury vehicles and a mansion in Ghana.

Extradited July 9 - Up to 20 Years on Each Count

Kumi faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, each carrying a maximum of 20 years in prison. His co-conspirators face related charges in the Northern District of Ohio.

Federal prosecutors in the Northern District of Ohio brought the case as part of the Justice Department’s Elder Justice Initiative. Investigators say they are continuing to identify victims and trace money connected to the alleged network. The charges are allegations, and Kumi is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

How to Recognize AI-Video Romance Fraud

Federal investigators warn that AI tools can make fake online identities appear more convincing than a static photograph. They recommend treating requests for money from someone met online as a major warning sign and reporting suspected fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
