A 45-Day Search Comes to an End

A Florida woman accused in the death of 43-year-old father Jason Coulthart was captured after a 45-day multiagency manhunt that stretched across weeks of uncertainty for his family.

Isabelle Johnson, 38, was arrested without incident on Aug. 13 at a home outside Cottondale in Jackson County, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said a U.S. Marshals task force located her using information developed by the sheriff’s cybercrime unit.

Johnson was returned to Walton County and was being held without bond, People reported.

The arrest ends one phase of a case that began with a missing father and eventually became a homicide investigation.

Jason Coulthart Had Been Missing Since May

Coulthart was reported missing to police in Niceville in late May.

Weeks later, investigators received information from an incarcerated person concerning the possible location of his remains. Authorities found Coulthart dead in Freeport on June 25, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office reporting cited by People.

The circumstances of the discovery moved the case immediately into a far darker category.

But for Coulthart’s family, he was more than the center of a criminal investigation.

Authorities previously said he was a father to a 20-year-old son, a brother and a friend whose relatives wanted the public to remember the person behind the case.

That human focus remained important as the search for Johnson continued.

Authorities Said Johnson Used Multiple Identities

Investigators publicly warned during the manhunt that Johnson could be difficult to locate.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said she was known to use several aliases and multiple identities. Authorities also said she frequently moved between locations while allegedly persuading others to help her.

Investigators released information about identifying tattoos and offered a $16,000 reward for information leading to her arrest.

Five people had previously been arrested and accused of helping Johnson avoid capture, according to People.

Authorities alleged that the assistance included transportation, shelter, supplies, a cellphone and misleading investigators.

Those accusations have not been proven in court.

Investigators Tracked Communications

Despite the public alerts and reward, authorities said Johnson was ultimately found through investigative work.

Chief Deputy Dustin Cosson said information developed by cyber investigators tracking communications led authorities to the location where Johnson was arrested.

The sheriff’s office described the search as exhaustive and credited the multiple agencies that assisted during the 45-day effort.

Johnson is charged in connection with Coulthart’s death and is expected to face additional charges, authorities said.

People reported that it was unclear whether she had an attorney available to comment on her behalf.

An Arrest Does Not End the Family’s Loss

The capture gives investigators a defendant in custody, but it does not undo the weeks in which Coulthart’s family did not know where he was.

Nor does it change what his son, parents, sibling and friends are now facing.

The legal process will determine whether prosecutors can prove the allegations against Johnson.

For Coulthart’s family, however, the case began before warrants, aliases and a nationwide search became part of the public story.

It began with a 43-year-old father disappearing.

Authorities have since emphasized that his life should not be reduced to the circumstances of his death or the woman accused of causing it.

With Johnson now in custody, the manhunt is over. The effort to determine exactly what happened to Jason Coulthart - and to pursue accountability for his death - is not.
